About the Comrades Marathon (1921 - 2022)

The Comrades Marathon is one of the greatest Ultra Marathon races in the world. Athletes travel from all over the world to this once a year event. This is primarily a challenge within each runner, where he competes with his own willpower and pain threshold. This ultra-marathon takes place between Durban and Pietermaritzburg an up-run the one year, and the next year from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, a Down-run. The event owes it’s beginnings to the vision of one man, World War I veteran Vic Clapham, in memory of the fallen First World War Soldiers.

2022 is the 95th running of Comrades and it is a “DOWN RUN”, starting at the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg and finishing at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. The distance is approximately 90,2km.

Today, Comrades is the oldest running marathon that has seen the largest global participation.

Top 10 racing Tips

  1. Stairs Training
The Comrades Marathon 2020 down run, might sound a little easier, but it is as difficult if not more difficult than the up run.
It is important to incorporate a stairs session once a week into your regular training routine. Running down the stairs and getting the legs used to this impact is important.
You need to get your legs as strong as possible. A short morning routine of squats, lunges, calf raises and core work will go a long way on the day.
  2. Find hilly routes to train on.
Although it’s a down run, don’t be fooled by the uphills in this race. Within the first half of the down run, there’s more uphill running than downhill, with the highest point about 23kms into the race.
  3. Do two Ultra runs before the day.
It is advisable to do a minimum of two ultra runs before race day. A 50km run with about eight weeks to go and a 60km run with about five weeks to go. This will give you the physical and mental confidence you need to finish the race.
  4. Practise your nutrition prior to the race
Don’t try anything new on the day. Replicate the exact race day diet that you've tested on your longest training run in the build-up to the race. If what you’ve tested works, then stick with it and don’t deviate.
  5. Plan what to drink on race day.
Staying hydrated throughout the race is essential. It can get very hot towards the end, and you want to ensure your body is prepared to deal with this.
  6. Carbo-loading.
If you’re a fan of carbo-loading, then carbo-load a lot more than you usually would compare to a regular marathon. Beware, carboloading does not work for everyone. Test it before during your training to see if it works for you.
  7. Vaseline is your friend.
Rather use too much Vaseline and cover all areas that you think you may chafe. If you’re unsure, then apply more. The guys must remember to strap some tape over your nipples. You don't want to be dealing with is bleeding nipples later in the race.
  8. Pacing Correctly.
Pacing is crucial throughout the race but especially in the beginning. There is a lot of downhill in the second half, and if your quads are fatigued before this, then you’re going to lose lots of time by not being able to take advantage of this in the second half.
